We’re always looking for enthusiastic local volunteers and WOOFERS to grow in the market garden.

All skill abilities are welcome, but the joy of farming is necessary!
Come for as long as suits you, weekly or however often you’d like
Learn how to grow organic & sustainable food
Spend some time with your hands in the soil
Local volunteers receive a seasonal lunch or veg box
Woofers share accommodation and board in the shared community space in a beautiful home

Conventional farming is a self-perpetuating cycle of destruction and expensive chemical dependence. Without soil organisms and good soil structure; water and nutrients leach away, and the soil compacts and becomes prone to erosion
-In 2014 farmers weekly announced we only have a hundred harvests left in our country

Sir George Stapledon, who was an English grassland scientist and pioneer environmentalist, (1882-1960) in his view a rotational system not only maintained soil fertility, but it also kept farmers self-sufficient by avoiding the need for chemical fertilizers and imported animal feeds; mixed farming gave farmers agricultural resilience and stability.

1. Wild Garlic – blood cleanser, reduces high blood pressure and cholesterol levels and can be made into a yummy pesto
2. Nettles – one of the most nutritious plants you can eat out of the ground. Best eaten as tender shoots and serve to cleanse the blood, they ease the pain from rheumatism and arthritis, and clear dandruff
3. Wild mustard garlic / Hedge Garlic – good in salads, blood cleanser
4. Hairy Bittercress - bitter with mustardy flavour. Rich in vitamin C & A
5. Cleavers / Sticky Willy - eat tops when young or cooked (eat before the seeds appear) - lymphatic system cleanser
6. Hawthorn – remedy for all problems of the heart; such as regulating blood pressure. Young leaves are good for salad, berries are best after the frost
7. Hogweed - not to be mistaken for Giant Hogweed which is very dangerous. Pick with gloves and cook - shoots can be cooked with butter like asparagus or can add to soups or stews
8. Three Cornered Leek - green stripe running down the petal - taste garlicy / chivey

A report confirms that pesticides, fungicides and herbicides damage soil biomes and reduce fertility.

‘Soil covers this month’s front page of the science journal Nature, headlining with: “Down to Earth - How pesticides reshape soil biodiversity”. The cover refers to the recently published extensive research of an international team of researchers: “Pesticide residues alter taxonomic and functional biodiversity in soils”.

Soils host about 59% of Earth’s biodiversity. Soil life is essential for soil and wider ecosystem functions, and for our subsistence. Soil organisms provide critical functions such as plant growth, food production, water purification, buffering and storage, and carbon storage. The harmful impacts of pesticides on soil biodiversity, threatening ecosystem health, have been demonstrated in scientific literature. We dug into the topic in our recent earlier blog, celebrating World Soil Day.

Before, during, and after of the makeover of the ‘hot mess’ tunnel 🥵

In short, the overwintered polytunnel broad beans finished around the start of some serious heatwaves, and the prospect of clearing a messy tangle of beans, cleavers, and groundsel in 43degC heat did not appeal. However with a good team of people (massively grateful for our team of wwoofers and local volunteers) and a relatively cool Monday (32C in polys) we managed to give it one hell of a makeover! Now home to some late cucumbers, spring onions, and basil 🌿

Brassica galore! 🥦

Everything growing thick and fast, and it’s a huge job to keep on top of all the watering to keep these thirsty beauties from complaining. Once we get on top of the more tricky weeds (cough cough couch cough cough) , we’ll be under sowing most of the brassica block to try and keep the ground cooler + lock in moisture.
Fingers crossed the work will pay off since this years slug population shouldn’t be too much of a threat to tasty young buckwheat shoots 🤞

It’s been a super busy end of spring/beginning of summer, but here’s a run down of the things we’ve remembered to take photos of:

1. Celeriac galore 👩‍🌾
2. Nasturtiums make a glorious come back into our flowery salad mix 🌼
3. A funky cellar slug(?), a populous benign inhabitant of our compost heap 🐌
4. Mummified cabbage caterpillars, stopped in their tracks by parasitic wasps! 🐝
5. On a compost flipping marathon, and loving every second of it - go James! 💪
6. New spring arrivals to our chicken brood, Lady Goldie is being a wonderful mummy to her fostered children 🐣
7. Lovely lovely lovely WWOOFer team tackling the pruning, twiddling, and weeding of a tomato tunnel - already lots of plants with (unripe) trusses of fruit 🍅

We are making a return to our usual markets: Sherston, Marshfield Post Office, and Chipping Sodbury Hatherells Yard from this Friday, and the start of June heralds the return of the weekly veg box, so lots of opportunity to get your paws on some delicious veg! 🌱
